The death toll from snowstorms in the US increased to 49 people, victims were recorded in 9 states.

Buffalo, the second largest city in New York state, is one of the places most severely affected in the snowstorm that is sweeping across the United States.

Local officials announced that the death toll in New York as of December 26 had reached 27, an increase of 14 people compared to the previous night’s statistics. Most of the deaths were people stuck in cars, stuck outside in the snow or having heart problems while clearing snow. In addition to New York, eight other states also recorded victims of snowstorms, with the total number of deaths increasing to 49 people.

Since the blizzard hit Buffalo, parts of the city have been buried under more than 1.2 meters of snow. New York Governor Kathy Hochul called it a “once in a hundred” weather disaster for people in the western state.

Mark Poloncarz, the leader of Erie County, said the number of local deaths in the past few days has exceeded reports. However, the forensics agency needs more time to determine if the deaths are related to the blizzard.

Snow fell less on December 26 in western New York, no more white snow storms. However, meteorologists warn the area will continue to record about 30cm of snow for the next day.

The New York state government said it was the worst snowstorm since a natural disaster in 1977 in Buffalo, when the city killed nearly 30 people.

New York State mobilized the National Guard to assist local authorities in rescuing people trapped in cars and areas without power, health checks and food assistance. However, some paramedics were also caught in the blizzard and needed rescuers.

Electricity was partially restored in Erie County on the morning of December 26. Energy monitoring organizations estimate that about 14,000 households remain without power in the area. President Joe Biden phoned the Governor of New York and pledged that the federal government would soon help.
